Introduction: Mirabilis jalapa L., commonly known in Cuba as clavelina or maravilla, is a medicinal plant used for skin disorders in many regions of the world. In Cuba, its use for skin disorders is not frequent, and no reports are available of its use for cutaneous melanosis.
Objective: Describe the effects of the use of Mirabilis jalapa L. for cutaneous melanoses.
Methods: A systematic search was conducted in the main medical literature databases: Scielo, PUBMED, Medline and Scopus, from 1 January to 1 September 2019. The search included books, review articles, original articles and theses. A total 23 articles were reviewed.
Data analysis: Mirabilis jalapa L. has many medicinal properties. The flavonoids contained in the flowers exhibit an extraordinary range of chemical and pharmacological activities, displayed in the treatment of skin capillary fragility disorders: ecchymosis, petechiae and other forms of hyperpigmentation. They also act as antioxidants, free radical scavengers and enzyme inhibitors, and have antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, antiviral and anticarcinogenic properties.
Conclusions: Further studies should be conducted about the topical use of Mirabilis jalapa L. for cutaneous melanosis. Its use is one more therapeutic tool for this disorder, fostering the substitution of imports of hypopigmenting drugs.
