An alternative aid for teaching and learning about skin diseases
Keywords:
skin diseases, dermatology, teaching-learning aids.Abstract
Introduction: Daily medical practice does not always make it possible for students to see many of the skin diseases included in the Dermatology undergraduate syllabus. This fact limits the students' pre-professional training.
Objectives: Substantiate the use of paintings containing signs of skin diseases as teaching aids for the subject of Dermatology.
Methods: A prospective cross-sectional qualitative study was conducted at Dr. Agostinho Neto Clinical Surgical Maternity Hospital in Guantánamo from September to December 2018. Theoretical and empirical methods were used. The study sample was composed of 30 students who answered a survey about the learning of some skin diseases included in the undergraduate course program. The paintings were analyzed from an esthetic and medical perspective.
Results: 55.8% of the students reported insufficient learning about some skin diseases included in the course program which are not frequent in medical practice. A total 86 paintings were identified which illustrated 153 images suggesting different conditions. A relationship was established between the conditions illustrated and the knowledge system included in the course program.
Conclusions: The use of paintings illustrating skin diseases is a viable alternative in the training of students for the diagnosis of diseases included in the course program.
