Abstract

Introduction: Skin and soft tissue infections are highly prevalent worldwide. They affect patients of all ages and are also one of the main causes of hospitalization.

Objective: To carry out an update on the clinical manifestations and therapeutic management of skin and soft tissue infections.

Methods: A review was conducted of the literature available in SciELO, World Health Organization, Pan American Health Organization, BVSCuba, PubMed Central, Medline, ClinicalKey and Medigraphic. The descriptors used were infecciones de piel y partes blandas [skin and soft tissue infections], piodermitis [pyodermitis] and resistencia antimicrobiana [antimicrobial resistance]. During the review process, 25 references were retrieved, with an update of the previous five years.

Conclusions: At present, these infections continue to be a public health problem worldwide, especially in developing countries. Although most infectious diseases are treatable and preventable, their multifactorial nature makes them difficult to control.
