Introduction: Pyodermitis are infectious skin pathologies caused by facultative Gram-positive cocci and are one of the most prevalent infections in dermatological consultations.
Objective: To characterize the behavior of patients with a diagnosis of pyodermitis in the Dermatology service of the Clinical Surgical University Hospital.
Methods: An observational descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out. The universe of the study consisted of all patients with a diagnosis of pyodermitis who attended the outpatient clinic of the Dermatology service in the period from January 2020 to January 2022. The sample was made up of the first 150 patients who met the established inclusion criteria. Sociodemographic, clinical, microbiological and therapeutic variables were studied.
Results: 65% of the patients were female and the most common age was 51 to 66 years with 36%. Superimposed infections occurred in 32% of cases and dermatoses in 19%. The predominant diagnosis was furunculosis in 58% and cellulitis in 19%. 47% of patients had been previously treated and 34% required hospital admission. The response to treatment was favorable in 80%.
Conclusions: Pyodermitis was more common in women between the fifth and sixth decade of life. Immunosuppression continues to be a fundamental predisposing factor in the appearance of these infections. A favorable response to treatment with cephalosporins was confirmed.
