Syphilis and pregnancy assesment in Bayamo municipality
Abstract
Introduction: Gestational syphilis is diagnosed during pregnancy, the postabortion
period, or the immediate postpartum period. It can cause perinatal
death, premature birth, low birth weight, congenital abnormalities, and active
syphilis in the newborn.
Objective: To determinate the behavior of syphilis in pregnant women in the
Bayamo municipality.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study of a series of cases was carried
out in the Bayamo municipality, Granma province, in the period 2015 to 2020. The
total number of patients consisted of 78 pregnant women seen in the
Dermatology consultation of the polyclinics with a diagnosis of syphilis who met
the inclusion criteria. The information was obtained from primary sources and a
data collection form was created for the research. Descriptive statistics were
used.
Results: The age group of 25 to 29 years predominated, with secondary
education. All patients were diagnosed with early syphilis, 69.2% with primary
syphilis and the rest with latent early syphilis. The most representative treatment
was benzathine G penicillin.
Conclusions: Despite the number of patients with gestational syphilis between
2015 and 2020, all were diagnosed with early syphilis, and almost all of them
received the treatment of choice.
