Effectiveness of Conventional Surgical Treatment in Patients with Basal Cell Carcinoma

Abstract

Introduction: Basal cell carcinoma is a very common malignant tumor in humans. It is considered a locally invasive, aggressive, and destructive neoplasm.

Objective: To determine the effectiveness of conventional surgical treatment in patients with basal cell carcinoma.

Method: A descriptive, prospective, longitudinal study was conducted in 100 patients with a diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma treated at the Dermatology Service of the Miguel Enríquez University Clinical Surgical Hospital, from June 2023 to January 2025.

Results: Of the cases, 52.0 % corresponded to the age group older than 60 years, 52.0 % were male, and 57.0 % reported being smokers. In 89.0 % of cases, the lesions were located on the face, and in 70.0 %, they measured less than two cm. The nodular clinical form was present in 45.0 % of patients. After surgery, 94.0 % of patients showed tumor-free margins, and the effectiveness of conventional surgery reached 98 %.

Conclusions: Conventional surgery is an effective treatment in the management of patients with basal cell carcinoma.
