Treatment of Condyloma Acuminatum with Cryosurgery in Pediatric Age

Abstract

Introduction: Condyloma acuminatum is a viral infection that has no specific treatment and its continuous recurrences make the constant search for therapeutic alternatives necessary.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of cryosurgery in pediatric patients with condyloma acuminatum.

Methods: A prospective, open, longitudinal, prospective, pilot study was conducted, which included 48 patients between 1 and 18 years of age with a diagnosis of condyloma acuminatum. Patients were treated in the Dermatology outpatient clinic of the General Hospital Ibarra of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security, in the province of Imbabura, Ecuador, from March 2016 to March 2017. The treatment consisted of the application one time a week of liquid nitrogen on the totality of the lesions for 6 weeks. Patients were evaluated after 3.6 and 12 months. The evaluation criteria were established by the disappearance of the clinical lesions of condyloma acuminatum and the response to the medical treatment applied was evaluated as the main variable in favorable and unfavorable.

Results: Thirty-three percent were male. The group aged 13 to 18 years was predominant, with clinical lesions on genital skin. 72.9 % presented multiple lesions and 41.6 % had a favorable response to the medical treatment applied.

Conclusions: Most of the patients seen had a favorable response to the medical treatment applied, demonstrating the effectiveness of cryotherapy in condyloma acuminatum in children.
