Abstract

Introduction: Scabies is a parasitic infestation caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, hominis variety, characterized by intense nocturnal pruritus and clinical manifestations according to the host and the parasite. They are considered an immune response of the skin to the presence of the mite. The diagnosis, in most patients, is clinical and is based on family history or close contacts with symptoms and signs of the disease. Sometimes there may be atypical clinical forms or suggestive of other dermatoses, so it is necessary to use diagnostic means that are useful to conclude the case and indicate the therapeutic approach.

Objective: To assess the importance of the use of diagnostic means in the identification of scabies.

Methods: A literature review of the articles available on the subject in SciELO, PubMed, Google Scholar, Medigraphic and Medline was conducted. The descriptors used were scabies, diagnostic means, mite test and skin biopsy. A total of 43 bibliographies by national and international authors were reviewed, of which 21 were selected according to the topic and its updating.

Conclusions: Scabies is one of the main reasons for dermatological consultation at present due to its high incidence in the population. Its atypical forms of presentation and torpid evolution make it necessary to use different diagnostic means, which can be used at different levels of action, to ensure the therapeutic and satisfactory evolution of patients.
